1978/79 Season Review

The previous season Rovers enjoyed a run to the European Cup Final where they lost to Alkhoven. They finished the season trophyless but high enough in the table to qualify for the UEFA Cup. Rovers were poor in the league this campaign, losing their first 3 games. The poor form led Roy to step aside as manager, with Ben Galloway returning on a temporary basis. But victories were hard to come by and it wasn't until January when Rovers gained their first, a shock 2-0 win over league leaders Carford. Roy then returned as permanent player-manager.

It seemed that the UEFA Cup games helped Rovers gain the confidence to secure a comfortable mid-table finish. Defeating a powerful Dynamo Zarcov, containing Shulgar, and two classic matches against Paco Diaz's Varagosa, being the highlights of their run to the final.

Rassburg, the Germans, had Hans Fischer, someone Roy admired and recognised as a great threat. Fischer helped Rassburg to an early lead but two inspiring displays from Mervyn Wallace led Rovers to an aggregate victory and their first UEFA Cup.
