1954-56

Reserve half-back, no known first team appearances.

Argent, Ben
1998-2001
AM
Talented but troubled attacking midfielder from the Rovers youth scheme. Scored a famous goal against Melboro' in the 2001 Derby, but displayed an offensive t-shirt to the Boro' fans. Sold to Castlemere for £2millon soon after.

Armstrong, George
1930s
Revered manager of the Rovers team in the 1930s. A bust of the great man is traditionally bowed to by new arrivals at the Rovers.

B

Baines

Played a few matches at the start of the 58/59 season when the Rovers suffered an injury crisis, debuting vs Tawport United.

Baissey, Joe

Baker, Peter
1973-74
GK
Reserve goalkeeper was injured at start of 73/74 season allowing Charlie Carter a debut after Tubby Morton broke his leg.

Ballard, Douglas
1968
CH
Signed for a club record £150,000 from Carford, Ballard was a disaster and soon moved on. A schemer and a cheat, after a terrible display against Shevnik Sparta in the European Cup, his dodgy ways were outed by Roy Race and he never played again. A supposed classy player, but never the right fit for the Rovers.

Bamber, Broz
1990 - 1993
RW/FW
Another product of the Rovers youth scheme, Bamber was a tricky winger and fine dribbler of the ball. Part of the famous youth side that won in Japan, Broz debuted in the Cup Winners Cup vs FC Verengen, scoring a fine goal. Scored his final Rovers goal in the FA win over Gatesfield in 1992.

Barker, Ted
1958-62
HB
A utility half back, Barker was a long time reserve at the Rovers, a capable player, he never let the anone down when given a rare first team appearance. Made his debut vs Bamford Athletic in Octiber 1958.

Baxter, Noel
1968-86
RB
One of the finest attacking full backs to play the game. Baxter signed on as an apprentice in 1968 making a first team debut in emergency circumstances vs Millborough in the opening match of the 71/72 season, he was so nervous and had to be substituted. However, this was probably the only blip in his long and successful Rovers career. An England international, Baxter tragically died in the Basran Disaster of 1986.

Beech, Paul
1975-76
RW
Reserve winger who replaced an injured Mervyn Wallace against Bowerton Villa in the injury crisis of spring 1976.

Benson
1930s
FW

Benson
1959-60
Named as reserve for league match vs Carlington County.

Benson, Buzz
1969-70
GK
A former paratrooper made his only Rovers appearance in the European Cup tie against Targuti Torpedoes, Tubby Morton hurt his knee sky diving and regular reserve Reg Scott had broken his wrist.

Bianco, Tony
1963-64
CH
An Anglo-Italian, Bianco was signed on from a London club when Rovers were still unsure of Paddy Ryan's ability to replace Andy McDonald as first choice centre-half. Injury prone, Bianco did not make any impact, his best performance coming against Vitriona in the Inter City Cup.

Biggs, Bill
1954-56
CH/LH
A reserve at the same time Roy Race, Biggs did not make the break through to the first team, although he was included on the 1955 summer tour of Costazuro.

Bishop, Robbie
1999-2000s
CF
A hot prospect from the Rovers youth set-up, Bishop was tipped to have a big impact in the 2000s.

Blackburn, Alec
1967-74
CM/FW
Blackburn was a long time reserve at the Rovers making sporadic first team appearances over his seven plus years at the club. A special place in history is reserved for the likeable forward, as he came off the bench vs Highwood Athletic to net the goal that won Rovers the 1968 title!

Blake
1955-56
HB/FW
Reserve player, no known first team appearances

Blake, Len
1970-71
GK
Reserve goalkeeper, sold to Kingsbay

Bonser, Bert
1954-57
CF/CH
Roy's first enemy at the Rovers, Bonser was not a nice young man. He was a hot prospect, but made himself unpopular after taking a dislike to Roy. Never made the Rovers first team, despite three years in the reserves.

Bracken, Gary
1996-2000
CM
The key creative midfielder in the Rovers 2000 Premiership winning side, Bracken was sold soon afterward to balance the books. Was tipped for international honours.

Branston, Fred
1957-58
HB
Reserve signed on in September 1957, an odd character, no known first team appearances.

Breedon, Will
1966-67
WG
Lightning fast, but with little footballing nous, Breedon was called into action just once against relegation threatened Toncastle in April 1967, replacing Tony Storme on the right wing. He didn't impress as the Rovers lost 3-0.

Bridger, Errol
1985-86
RB
A unique player in the history of the Rovers - Bridger made just one appearance and that was in the 1984 FA Cup Final win over Walford Rovers. Errol had a nightmare of a match and was never seen again.

Brown, Charlie "Buster"
1950s- 1968
LH
The joker of the Rovers squad for nearly twenty years, Buster was a solid if unspectacular left-half. Brown played in almost every Rovers fixture alongside Roy and Blackie picking up many medals along the way. Rarely on the score sheet, Buster did however go on a scoring spree in the first half of the 1961/62 season, netting five times, his only Rovers goals!

Brown, Winston
1982-84
WG
One of Taffy Morgan's "Apprentices" Brown never made the first team.

Bruckner, Karl
1991-96
CB/DM
Signed on from Dynamo Bresden in December 1991, the "Bresden Bull" was a world class German international. In the style of the classic '90s German sweeper, Bruckner loved carrying the ball forward from the back, but was also a fearsome tackler. Moved on after relegation to become player manager of Rassburg.

Burke, Jack
<1955
CF
Was the regular centre-forward replaced by Roy Race.

Butler, Mark
1982-91
CB
Signed on as a hot prospect from Holverton Athletic, Butler, a Welsh youth international, spent two years in the Rovers reserves before debuting to high expectations vs Deans Park. Things never really worked out for Butler, never regaining a regular first team spot after being replaced by Emlyn Hughes early in the 85/86 season.

C

Caley, Geoff
1960
WH
Caley signed on with the Rovers alongside two Shermall team-mates. After an accident at Shermall Haven oil refinery, Rovers were missing a number of first teamers. The three new signings turned out against Langton United, but were paid by the Shermall chairman to deliberately play poorly. Roy locked them in a cupboard at half-time to prevent them causing any more damage.

Cameron, Jock
1903-?
CH
A record signing for the early Rovers, £2000 it cost to bring in the Scotland international to be a ready made captain.

Canning, Ralph
1959-61
RW
Real name Raphael Kannovski from Macrovania, Ralph was spotted during a Rovers training camp in Cornwall. With Dick Stokes away on international duty, Canning took over and kept his place for the first half of the season. Made sporadic appearances afterwards.

Carter, Ted
1963-65
RW
After Dick Stokes career ending accident, young Ted Carter from a Rovers supporting family debuted against Stanport scoring a spectacular hat-trick. A brilliant two seasons on the wing saw Carter move to Italy in a big money move at the start of the 65/66 season.

Carter, Charlie
1973-92
GK
"The Cat" was given a surprise debut in September 1973 after Tubby Morton broke his leg. A Geordie, with rockstar looks and musical talent to match, young Charlie had a choice to make; be the Rovers goalie or a pop star. Luckily for Rovers fans he chose football and went onto have a long career, being capped once for England in 1978 vs Netherlands. Carter eventually lost his first team place to Andy Styles in the 84/85 season, but was a reliable second choice when called upon for a further seven years. His final Rovers appearance came in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Burndean in 1992.

Cassidy, Trevor
1975-86
FB/M
The man who made the number 12 shirt his own over a ten year Rovers career, Trevor Cassidy was a utility player, made to be a substitute. Rarely impressive, but rarely poor, Cassidy was tragically murdered in the Basran Disaster of 1986.

Chapman, Lester
1982-84
SW/CB
Apprentice, released without making a reserve or first-team appearance.

Chapman, Des
1990-96
CB
The first of the famous Japan Cup winning youths to break into the first team, Chapman became one of the first names on the team sheet in the early 90s. Forming a good partnership with Johnny Dexter, Chapman was a technically gifted defender, with good positional sense. He eventually left the club after relegation in 1996.

Clark, Kevin
1987-96
CM/AM/WG
Clark was given his chance after signing on from Selbridge Athletic in March 1987, adding flair to the Rovers attack. As he matured, Roy Race asked Kevin to play a deeper role, becoming a central midfield playmaker and a key part of the team. Unfortunately became invovled in a complex financial fraud scheme and spent time in prison in the late 90s. An England B international.

Clark, Steve
1993-96
LW/LB/CB
A strange addition to the Rovers first team, Steve Clark was an occassional starter in the 94/94 and 94/95 seasons, usually as a left wing back, but sometimes conventional winger or left sided centre-back.

Clayton, Ben
1960-62
GK
Clayton made just two Rovers appearances in the second half of the 61/62 season, both against Coalport United in the league and FA Cup.

Coleman
<1955
IR
Replaced by Blackie Gray in the Rovers XI.

Cooper, Ken
1966-71
LB
Had such a close partnership with right-back Derek Millar that they sometimes even swapped names, shirts and positions. Nobody thought that the full-back pairing of Williams and Roberts could be replaced, but these two were almost like for like, as if the previous two had never left. Cooper debuted without Millar and found he was rubbish without his soulmate, so Millar was promptly signed on. Both retired suddenly to run a car repair business together.

Cooper, Jeff
1997-?
GK
Cooper first came to the attention of Rovers fans as the goalkeeper for Gatesfield who almost relegated them to the third tier. Roy was impressed enough to sign him up as the number 1 for his new look side. Cooper was a solid if unspectacular first choice for the next few years, winning the FA and Premiership.

Coren, Colin
1979-80
CF
Coren was a surpirse choice to replace an injured Roy Race in the middle of the 79/80 season, scoring 4 goals in 3 games, with braces against Eastoke United and Molton United.

Coyle, Jimmy
1990-?
CB
Another of the 1990 Japan Cup winning youths, Coyle made a handful of first team appearances.

Crawford, Brian
1982-84
CF
"Tiny" as the huge striker was nicknamed, never broke through from the youth team and quit football to become a first-class cricketer.

Croker, Matthew
1991-93
LW/AM
Signed from Deans Park, the son of legendary striker Denis Croker, was a big money, quality addition that helped Rovers secure the 91/92 league title. Croker left after less than two whole seasons, famously getting in a scrap with Rocky Race later in his career.

Crowley, Pete
1955-56
RH
A young reserve, made just one known senior appearance against Southwood Athletic in the FA Cup where he came up against old school rival Vince Jason, who poisoned his hair gel.

Croydon, Andy
1968-74
CH/DM
Having bided his time, Croydon eventually made the centre-half position is own after the departure of Doug Ballard. A solid defender, who rarely ventured forward, Croydon was perhaps the footballing version of the bland Surrey town. His Rovers career was ended at the start of the 73/74 season when Jimmy Slade injured him with a foul tackle, ironically it was Slade chosen as his replacement! Andy did make a return to football in the NASL, and was still playing in Belgium in the mid-80s.

D

Davies, Eddie
1958-61
LW
Left winger who made sporadic appearances in the first team. His final Rovers appearance came on tour in Italy against Stadia Batori.

Dawson, Tom
<1954-70
LW
A long serving winger best described as having longevity. Dawson was always in the team, except just once when the Rovers directors decided to replace him with a more maverick option, it didn't work and Dawson returned to go about his job in his own rather dull way. Dawson left after the signing of Vernon Eliot, but was still playing for Gatesfield in the mid-80s.

Dean, Barry
1990-?
FW
Youth winner of Japan Cup, no known first team appearances.

Derry, Ralph
1971-81
LB
With Rovers in a panic after the sudden retirement of Cooper and Millar, Derry was signed from Second Division Westbank and quickly establshed himself as the left half of the attacking full back duo with Noel Baxter. Derry's career was at its peak when he suffered a horrific injury in the opening match of the 75/76 season. He never regained his first team spot, but made occasional appearances from the bench.

Dexter, Johnny
1986-95
CB/LB
"The Hard Man" joined the new look Rovers in the summer of 1986 from Burnside Athletic, Roy needing some steel in the aftermatch of Basran. Dexter was a shrewd signing, his experience guilding the young Rovers in the following years. Dexter was made captain after Roy's retirement, before leaving to become a succesful manager of emerging Castlemere. Has 14 England caps.

Dexton, Richie
1977/78
FW
Apprentice, son of former Rovers scout Sam Dexton. No known reserve or first team appearances.

Diaz, Paco
1978-83
WG
The Spanish superstar was signed for a club record £700,000 from Real Varagosa after impressing Roy in a UEFA Cup tie. Paco was a genuine world class player, either on the right or left wing. He eventually returned to Spain after a sudden bout of homesickness.

Dixon, Roger
1976-80
CF
Nicknamed "super-sub" Dixon was signed on from Kingsbay for a bargain £70,000 determined to rid himself of his reputation and earn a starting place. However, Dixon had no stamina and a bad attitude. Was sold to rivals Melboro' at the start of the 80/81 season in a joint deal with Geoff Giles.

Dobson, Dave
1982-84
GK
Apprentice, nicknamed "Doughnut" due to his roundness. No first team appearances.

Dolland
1900s
GK
Grandfather of Len Dolland, who goalie when Rovers first entered the Football League.

Dolland, Len
<1954-61
GK
An established England international, Dolland was first choice until a car crash allowed Tubby Morton to debut as his replacement. Len stayed on for a number of years as reserve.

Drake, Colin
1986-87
CB
Apprentice, no known first team appearances

Drury, Mike
1959-60
GK
Reserve goalie who was determined to get a first team place at any costs, including being involved in a serious fire at Melchester Stadium that put Blackie Gray at Death's Door. His one Rovers appearance came in the friendly vs Flaudermitz when he was taken off at half-time. Was sacked soon after.

Dupont, Pierre
1956-58
RW
Signed from Rochemonte Rapides after facing the Rovers on a summer tour, the flyling Frenchman was like no winger the Rovers crowd had seen before. Lightning fast with a firecracker shot, Dupont was a superstar. Returned to France after a few games of the 58/59 season.

Durham, Keith
1997-2000s
CM
Signed from Railford Town on a free transfer the combative midfielder would go on to become the first black captain of the Rovers. A key memeber of Roy Race's new look side.

Dylan, Chris
1968-72
LH/CM/UT
A bright lad with an interest in politics and the environment, Dylan's campaigning would often lead to trouble for him and the other Rovers. A regular replacement in the team, Dylan played the majority of matches in the 69/70 season at left-half, with mainly substitute appearances after. Was released at the end of the 71/72 season.

E

Eager, Eddie
1969-72
RW
A useful attacking winger, Eager was always eager to make an impression on his few first team chances. Was one of a number of fringe players released at the end of the 1971/72 season, even after scoring in the FA Cup Final!

Eckroyd, Mark
1960-61
Short term manager of the Rovers appointed by Lance Vigors, when he swapped Galloway and Morgan with Shermall's Eckroyd and Moller. A clever coach, but dominated by the villain Vigors.

Edwards, Willie
1975-80
CM/WG
An exciting attacking player, Edwards never let the Rovers down when called upon, mainly played in central midfield.

Eliot, Vernon
1969-82
WG
Signed from Stanport Rangers, Vernon was a history maker as the Rovers first black player and the first black man to play for England. A dynamic attacking winger, both footed, fast with great skill, Vernon was immovable from his position on the Rovers wing for over a decade. His career was cut short after being injured in a crowd stampede after a charity cricket match. He became a Rovers youth coach before embarking on a career in the media as a smart-talking pundit on TV. An England international.

Enqvist, Per
1999-?
CM/RM
The Danish international with the Swedish name was signed to strengthen the Rovers squad, but became a key memebr of the title win side, playing either in central midfield or wide.

Evans, Sandy
1979-80
GK
Small for a goalkeeper, the young reserve made just one appearance for the Rovers in the horrendous defeat to Icelandic part-timers Heklavik in the UEFA Cup

Evans, Paul
1996-?
RM/AM
A member of Roy Race's new look Rovers, Evans was the engine of the midfield, who chipped in with the odd important goal. A decent player, but not in the class of those before him.

F

Fabrizi, Carlo
1963
Famous Italian supercoach who made Dorino the most feared team in Europe. Tactically a trend setter, playing a defensive formation, introducing the centre back position to the Rovers. Results initially were brilliant, but the Rovers could not keep up with his strict fintess regime and flagged. Was sacked after trying to remove Roy using underhand and dangerous scheming.

Fane, Gary
1975-78
FW/RW
Introduced to the first team squad in the 1975/776 season, Fane was a regular sub, but never a starter. Debuted against Weston Town in the opening match of 75/76, his last known selection was as an unused substitute vs Vrayonne Rapide in the 1978 European Cup 3rd Round.

Fenton, Ted
1959-62
CH/CF
Reserve, made a few first team appearances, notably in early 1960 in the FA Cup 3rd and 4th round wins over Birnham City and Lowick Town. Returned to the reserves for the next couple of seasons.

Finnigan, Phil
1950s
IL
Captain of the reserves when Roy Race make his initial breakthrough, a natural leader and fine man, but never a regular in the first team. Was kept on a specialist reserve captain.

Ford, Colin
1993-96
CF
Reserve striker in a poor Rovers side, never a regular starter.

Foster, Craig
1996-98
CF
Billed as the new Roy Race, Foster was a natural goalscorer and crowd favourite before his move across the River Mel in a move that saw Rocky Race return to Mel Park. Went on to be a top goalscorer with Melboro'.

Fox
89-90
CB
Played one match vs Tynecaster United in the League Cup after Rovers suffered an injury and suspension crisis.

Fraser, Ian
1983-84
RB
Scottish apprentice signed from Dundonald Rangers. No known first team appearances.

Frazer, Stan
1975-76
RW
Signed for a big £250,000 when Rovers lost regular right winger Mervyn Wallace and his reserve to injuries, Frazer was a natural talent with a big head. Was soon sold to NASL Salt Lake Superstars for £275,000 and a small profit.

G

Galloway, Ben
1937-53
RB
Introduced into one of the strongest of all Rovers' sides, Galloway developed into a fine right-back gaining England caps. After the War, Ben was made captain until his retirement, when he became manager and much later general manager. A true Rovers legend.

Gates, David
1999-?
CB
Signed from Division 2 Stockley Town, the towering Gates was a commanding defender, just making a first team place his own in the early 2000s.

Giles, Geoff
1968-80
RH/CM/CM
A well sought after player, Ben Galloway beat off the competition of a number of First Division sides to sign a young Giles. And what a signing he was. By 1970 Giles was an England regular included in the 1970 World Cup squad. Short, but a ball of aggression, Giles was a brilliant defensive midfielder. But after the retirement of Lofy Peak, Roy Race chose to move Giles to centre-back, Rovers would go onto win the title that season (79/80), which would prove to be Giles last in a Rovers jersey. The most controversial transfer in history saw Giles move across the River Mel to join rivals Melboro'. He would grow and turn into a fine attacking midfielder, leading Race to admit the sale to be his biggest mistake. Returned to the Rovers in 97 as Roy's assistant.

Giles, Mark
1993-97
RB/CB
A bit part player in one of Rovers' worst sides, Giles was a relatively consistent performer when called upon.

Giles, Terry
1984-85
CF
Reserve, no known first team appearances.

Giles, Tony
1986-87
CB
Apprentice, no known first team appearances

Goodall, Albert
1920s-30s
CF
The star centre-forward of the Melchester side that rose from the Third Division to multiple league and cup winners. A great header of the ball.

Goode, Tommy
1993-97
LW/LB
One of the better players in a poor Rovers side, Goode was an exciting dribbler, who was often asked to play a defensive game unsuited to his natural talents.

Gordon, Ralph
1992-93
Briefly manager of the Rovers, joining from Melboro'. Famed for his all-out-attack style. Popular at first, his tactics eventually led to a player revolt and the return of Race as manager.

Gosden, Nat
1980-84
CM/CB
Signed from Oldfield in an attempt to replace Geoff Giles, "Grandad" added valuable experience to a young and struggling Rovers side. However, his input did not prevent relegation. Gosden had a more positive influence in the promotion winning side, and was an ever present in 82/83 before falling our of favour and retiring after a final hurrah in the 84 Cup Final. Went on to become Rovers youth coach. Has 47 England caps.

Gray, Mark
1986-93
CM
Son of Blackie, "Cracker" was brought into the first team after the Basran disaster playing alongside his father. An aggressive tackler and fiery character, Mark was the opposite of Blackie and noweher near as good a footballer. Cracker was an almost every present for his first three seasons, before being dropped and never regaining a first team spot.

Gray, William
1953-93
IR/CF/CM
"Blackie" signed on for the Rovers a year before his great pal Roy Race having had a taste of league football with Second Division Burnchester City. Gray would form a perfect partnership with Race that would last until the late 80s when he became a bit part player. Was manager on two occasions, firstly as player-manager in 83-84, and again from 93-94. Blackie has 54 England caps, his final cap being won against Scotland in 1985.

Green, Sid
1954-55
RW
Reserve winger, no known first team appearances.

Griffiths, Hughie
<1954-63
RH

Griffiths, Jack
1960
RH
Brother of Hughie, Jack was a journalist called upon to play for the Rovers in the World Club Cup after a number of first teamers were injured in a match against a band of rebels.

Gronvold, Anton
1997-?
RB/RM/CM
Signed as an exciting Danish Under-21 international, Gronvold was primarily the right-wing-back in Roy Race's new look Rovers side. Ever present in his first three sesasons with Rovers, only a serious injury in the title winning campaign saw him out of the first team. Equally good in attack or defence, Gronvold was almost designed to be the perfect wing-back in the 3-5-2 system.

Gunn, Gary
1989-93
FW/WG
Son of Burndean manager Richie Gunn, young Gary initially had a major problem, he hated the Rovers. But, Roy Race was determined to sign him and sign him he did. Under the mentorship of Terry Spring, Gunn eventually became a regular in the 90/91 season before falling behind Matt Croker and Mozzie Mostin in the pecking order.

Guthrie, Vic
1979-86
CB/RB
The "Superbrat" was a controversial signing from Second Division Westbury Town. Costing just £20,000 the Wales international was famed for his short temper and violent on pitch episodes. Roy Race would never truly tame him, but he was a key member of the 79/80 title winning side. But his poor form was a major reason why Rovers were relegated the next season. Guthrie would sit out most of the promotion campaign for disciplinary reasons, as well as being a suspect in Race's shoooting. Guthrie would return as a first team pick until his untimely death in the Basran Disaster in 1986.

H

Hall, Jack
1957-58
RW
A young flyer, Hall was given a trial in a friendly match against Seacliff United, scoring twice.

Hallett, Jim
<1954-64
IL
More of a link man than a finisher, Hallett enjoyed a long career at the Rovers. A popular team man, Jim often enterained the Rovers with his acordion playing. Never a prolific scorer, Hallett did however, find the net in the 1964 European Cup Final won over Nettruno.

Harcombe, Ken
1959-61
IF
A forward able to play inside on right or left, Harcombe was a useful squad member, who first appeared as replacement for Blackie Gray after Gray was badly burned in a fire, scoring twice on debut vs Carlington County. Harcombe would keep his place for the next few months, in place of Hallett at inside left.

Hardisty, Alexander
1992-93
GK
The eccentric keeper, known as "Rapper" for his annoying habit of rapping at opponents, joined Rovers in a sensational deal on deadline day in March 92, from hometown club Railford Town. The move would help secure Rovers the title and earn Rapper England B caps. After Roy Race's helicopter crash, Rapper chose to move on.

Harper, Wes
1987-96
FW/RM
Harper debuted as an 18 year old alongside fellow youth product Terry Spring. A year later, the versatile attacking player would go on to become a key memeber of the side netting a hat-trick in the FA Cup 5th round win over Burndean. Harper would take up the right wing position until the arrival of Derek Mostin, when he was harshly dropped. However, Harper would regain his spot after Mostin's departure and enjoy three more years as Rovers' regular on the right, either on the wing or as wingback.

Hayward, Pete
1982-84
CM
Captain of the youth side, Hayward was a coach's nightmare; a gifted player, but a bit of a wild child. After on discrepancy too many, was released without making the breakthrough.

Hayward, Tim
1982-84
RB/RM
Brother of Pete, Tim was a nicer chap, but less natural player. Effective as right back or further forward, Tim was kept on after his brother's release, but made no known first team appearances.

Hedlow, Arty
1955-57
IR
Signed for a club record £10,000 from Elbury Wanderers, the England international inside right was supposed to replace Blackie Gray in the Rovers XI. However, Hedlow proved to be trouble, although he would eventually win over Race and Gray, he would never regain a first team spot.

Higby, Sam
1954-57
RW
A dependable reserve, Higby patiently waited for a first team chance, but when he thought it had finally arrived, along came Pierre Dupont to steal his opportunity. Higby then schemed and tricked in an attempt to discredit Dupont, but Roy and Blackie saw through him and Higby was again relegated to the reserves.

Holloway, Gerry
1976-81
LW/AM/CM
A bright academic, Holloway was signed on from Fourth Division Marlbury United as the replacement for the suddenly retired Jumbo Trudgeon. Holloway was lightning fast and left footed, giving the Rovers balance and allowing Vernon Eliot and Mervyn Wallace to rotate positions along the forward line. Later Holloway would drop into midfield, where his well timed runs into the box would bring vital goals. Roy Race had been tracking the "Hunter" for some time, eventually making his move during a pre-season 5-a-side tournament.
