1985/86 Season Review

Melchester went celebrity crazy with the arrivals of Bob Wilson, Emlyn Hughes, Steve Norman and Martin Kemp. But what was most amazing was that Rovers did well, really well. In fact they had a record breaking season. Veteran goalie Bob Wilson setting a new standard for consecutive clean sheets, largely thanks to the defensive leadership of 'Crazy Horse.' The musicians from Spandau Ballet proved to be fit and skilful enough to fit right in.

There was some disharmony among the squad, notably with Jimmy Slade, who was sent-off twice in a season. The maverick midfielder's last ever Rovers match coming against Walford in the Milk Cup when he was dismissed after coming on as a substitute for Rob Richards.

But still Melchester Rovers made it to Wembley for the Milk Cup Final and a comfortable three-nil win over Tynecaster United.

  1. I was a regular reader during this season and it certainly was ludicrous. Of course the most ridiculous thing was that they portrayed Spandau Ballet as constantly pursued by hordes of screaming girls and able to sell out stadiums, whereas in fact they were well past their peak (and had never really reached that level of popularity anyway!)

  2. Slight error, both Kempy and Norman arrived from Rockola Wanderers, obviously!

  3. This was when sadly I stopped buying it. Proper jump the shark moment. Mind you I was 13 then.
