Roy Race and his family are holidaying in Ibiza during the 1990 World Cup. With the semi-final between England and West Germany looming, tensions are rising on the island, where groups of English and Germany fans clash. Can Newton Oates continue his good form and fire England to the Final, or will Karl Bruckner keep West Germany on course for victory?

Yes!! you got the rap in!!! Newton Oates = legend!
ReplyDeleteGreat story, cant wait to see how you top this one!
I didn't think I'd be able to work with the 88-92 images much more; I wasn't happy with the kit changes. But last week I worked out how to do it. So I may return to this era after the next story, which is only a three weeker.
DeleteThere's a story line gap at the end of the 90/91 season after Rovers are knocked out of the Cup Winners Cup. I might finish that season off, Rovers need to finish high enough to qualify of the UEFA Cup.
Thats right it ended after the semi final. Good to see you have many more stories planned then.
ReplyDeleteWith these and your 'new beginning' storyline there is plenty of RotRs content at the moment.
But i got to tell you sorted out smoothly the 3 WC stories. Not the same concept to each other. Whats next the 1986 in Mexico? Bobby Robson had a really good squad then. or maybe the extremely challenging 1994 -new style pictures- which could be revolved around brazilian Malandro (according to Monthlies he was on bench most of '94 WC)
ReplyDeleteThe 86 is really hard; there is no Rovers connection at all as all the players were ruled out because of Basran.
DeleteI don't like the monthly stories at all. They covered the 1994 Rovers link too with Delroy of the Rovers. So I doubt I'll do anything with them soon.
For internationals for now, I may revisit two stories that I dumped; Scotland vs England Home International and England XI vs Team America from 1977 (the real match took place in 76) tied in with the Pine City Pirates story line. The Team America team could feature many stars from world football like the real one did.
Thats sounds very exciting cant wait for the late 70s! As about the 1986: MR signed 3 major players Bruce Miller from Italy, Johnny Dexter from div4 Burnside Athletic and Danish international Olly Olsen (but Denmark didnt play to WC). So you could get it around Roy's interest to sign Bruce Pancho Miller -with Dexter playing in the squad as well- or even make Denmark appear in Mexico!
ReplyDeleteBobby Robson had included Roy in the last ''22'' so Roy could have had an honourary invitation for the matches.
Would be also great if Boskovic manage the 1986 Hungary team! Playing against Dexter in Mexico like a proper crossover annual haha
I'll do a few experiments with the 1985/86 artwork. I just don't like it, but perhaps something can be done. Maybe Martin Kemp played well enough to get in the England squad!
DeleteI've started the next two stories one from 1979 and the next from 1990/91, but I might save the second for the annual. I've not yet done any strips for that yet. The World Cup stories do take much longer as I have to change all the kits and heads. A Rovers story I can do in two afternoons now.
The 1985/86 art is really easy for kits because there is no shading only the black lines. It's really hard to transfer heads over from the other seasons. I really need to find a way to get the heads of Kevin Draper, Alan Shields and Roger Harper into a similar texture otherwise a WC story would not be worth it.
DeleteI'll do a Rovers story from this season. It's another one when you look at the results, they should win the league easily. So after the League Cup Final in April they must fall away terribly.
storky who did rudi meisner played for? mentioned as international?
ReplyDeleteIt was the 1986 annual, Rovers played Stroberg in the Cup Winners Cup Final, he was mentioned as one of the best goalies in the world. Therefore he must have been German number one. Stroberg had Karl Muller and Englishman Paul Rawson (who is said to have turned down a transfer to Rovers).
DeleteRawson would have been in a 86 England WC squad.
Wow i didnt know that Rovers won another CWC! So that makes the total CWCs five and not four! what was the score and the scorers? It would awesome if u could upload some Annual stories! as a pre-game show leading to ur 2014 annual
ReplyDeleteI don't count the annual stories as part of the storyline. The team that played in this annual was the 1984/85 one. That was the year they did win the CWC, so count it as an alternative final.
DeleteHere's the Rovers line-up vs Stroberg (a strange selection)
Carter; Baxter, McKay, Slade, ???, Hunt, Richards, Gray, Race, Logan, Jones.
They won 3-2 - Goals from Hunt and Race2, Stroberg's scorers were Keller (European Footballer of the Year) and Karl Muller (who was later sent-off).
The artwork is random too as are positions. It looks like McKay played right-back and Baxter centre-half. Roy also took a penalty, which was saved, with his right foot, he didn't kick it with his left at all in the match. Then to cap it off, Roy's given the UEFA Cup trophy not the CWC.
but it was supposed to be the CWC right? storky any other interesting story through the annuals? (maybe some final or european match?)
ReplyDeleteMost of them were poor stories and out off sync. I liked the one in 1990 when Duncan McKay suffered a career threatening back injury. Roy nearly signed Claudio Lopez from Spain to replace him.
DeleteYou have to talk the annual stories as stand alone, one-offs. For Example, in the 1993 Yearbook the team against Apollo Romana is:
Styles; A.Ritchie, Johnson, Dexter, McKay; Clark, Blackie, Spring; Olsen, Race, Gunn. They wear the SEGA sponsored kit from 1991/92 season. So plenty of incorrect players in that line-up.
Apollo Romana was italian? european cup or friendly?
ReplyDeletewhy dont u start uploading one annual every week? would be so awesome!
It was a 3rd round, UEFA Cup tie, they are Italian captained by Carlo Mancini.
DeleteIt might be better if strkav uploads the annuals to his site. Ask him. If he doesn't have any (I have 80-93), I can scan mine and pass them to him.
I dont have any Strkav's contact details but he doesnt seem to have the same posting frequency like you (no offense, he s great though). I think its the best if u upload them on you Blog which is going big! One every week, please post some Annual scans it would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteI've a free slot for them now I worked out the code for the stickers page. They can have every other Monday, rotating with the season reviews. I've twelve albums, so that's 12 comic stories and 12 of the written Roy of the Rovers Stories. There's still nine season reviews too. So that's Mondays sorted until August! I could put up the Bobby of the Blues and Nippers from my Scorchers too.
DeleteYou're right about the blog here, stats have been crazy this week, over 200 views every day, 368 yesterday is the busiest Saturday ever. Monday is usually the busiest day, I guess people look when they're at work!
This is great news! I cant wait to see the annuals, the Nipper and the Bobby of the Blues stories! (as i think that Everpool is the biggest club in comic world ever due to presence in IPC and DC)
ReplyDeleteIs this Monday gonna be tomorrow?
Make the blog as big as you can - I consider your stories as official continuation of ROTR and the link to the ROTR comic history is essential.
Check here some additions I ve done

and

ps: If you can fill the gaps on the Roy's international table. there is a 1986 Holiday Special match against France and for sure an 1986 Annual match on international level.
