Season Review 1998/99

Roy Race had led Melchester Rovers back to the Premier League. Roy added just Declan McKaffree, a sixteen year-old boy spotted by Blackie Gray playing park football in Ireland. Surely Rovers needed more additions if they were to do anything other than avoid relegation?

Tynecaster United would provide a immediate test, with new big money signing Claudia running all over Steve Wootten. Although the captain would net a penalty to snatch a point, Roy had already made his mind up that Nobby was a "liability".

Dino Marcello, the Italian, was signed from Roy's old club AC Monza, ideally to replace Wootten. Steve didn't take the news well and stormed off. Keith Durham was named captain in his absence.

Rovers' league form was patchy, although they were save from relegation, sitting idly in mid-table was never something Roy Race enjoyed. However they had the distraction of a good cup run, beating First Division Rotherton in a replay, before knocking out Premiership Kelburn, Deans Park, eventual league-winners Weston Villa and Carford in the Semi-Final.

Johnny Dexter, now manager of Castlemere, led his side out a Wembley alongside his friend and former team-mate, Roy. In a great final, Rovers would win with the last kick of extra-time, as Steve Wootten popped up in the box to head home the winner!

Notes:
- Again Rovers have a very small squad, all players featured can be identified so there are no mystery men to add.
- Roy's tactics are unclear, it is suggested before the Carford semi-final that Rovers have switched to 4 at the back and this would surprise Carford, therefore it can be assumed that Rovers played a 3-5-2 for most of the season, with Lawrence and Gronvold as wing-backs.
- In my efforts to piece together a complete list of top-flight teams for every season, I have decided that the unidentified side in yellow are Wellingford.
