1993/94 Season Review

Melchester Rovers move into a new era, with Roy Race now missing his left foot and Blackie Gray permanent manager. The Rovers need a new Race in the number nine shirt, so up steps Rocky!

But the firebrand young forward has a disastrous start to his career and is sent off in just his second senior appearance. The red card marred a celebration day for his father and was the beginning of a long lasting fractious relationship between the two.

On the field the Rovers were really missing departed stars Rapper Hardisty, Terry Spring, Mozzie Mostin and Matt Croker. New comers Tommy Goode and Steve Clark weren't up to the normal Rovers standard.

Blackie struggled, always in the shadow of his best pal and never able to command the respect of the senior players. Tactics were inconsistent, switching between a back 3 and 4 almost ever game, Blackie was desperate to put his mark on the team.

One new signing did have a positive impact, Paul Delroy Ntende, a striker of Nigerian parentage. Tall and strong, with good feet, Ntende and Rocky formed a strong partnership on and off the field. Ntende's goals took Rovers to the FA Cup Semi-Finals. But in the league creativity and goals were lacking. Eventually with three games to go, Rovers needed five points to avoid the drop.

Following back to back one all draws, it took a last minute wonder striker from Rocky to get the win that would secure a place in the Premiership for 1994/95!
